We are looking for a Senior Linux Firmware Developer to further develop our Unwired Edge Cloud OS – a cloud-managed networking solution that powers thousands of routers and public WiFi access points across Europe.
Unwired Networks develops and operates a large network of routers in
public transport vehicles such as trains or buses within Europe.
This position is ideal for a seasoned developer who has a proven track
record of working on OpenWRT development, who is used to
diving into code to diagnose & fix various issues and to develop new
solutions. You will collaborate closely with a cross-functional team to
deliver cutting-edge solutions for the public transport industry.
Your Responsibilities
You’ll be part of the team responsible for developing and maintaining the software behind thousands of centrally managed routers and hotspots.
- Release new versions of our OpenWRT-based Linux firmware.
- Develop new features that support a cloud-managed network platform.
- Troubleshoot various issues to ensure our routers stay always-on.
- Deliver Edge Compute solutions (e.g. Kubernetes on trains) to our customers.
- Integrate with a large-scale cloud infrastructure using Kubernetes on Google Cloud.
- Streamline operations through automation, monitoring, and system robustness.
- Work across a diverse ecosystem of open-source technologies.
You'll also be involved in shaping our cloud stacks, internal tools, and customer-facing platforms.
Required
- Linux and Networking Expertise – Minimum 3-5 years of Linux & Network engineering and debugging experience.
- Programming Proficiency – Experience in one or more of the following languages: C, Python, LUA, or similar.
- Software Engineering Background – Bachelor’s degree in software engineering or equivalent experience.
Preferred
- Passion for Linux and Open Source.
- Completed projects involving OpenWRT, open-source contributions, or Linux networking.
- Knowledge in areas like embedded systems, device drivers, or systems engineering.
- Familiarity with cloud services and CI/CD pipelines..

Your Team
You will report directly to the Head of Engineering and will play a critical role in shaping the future of our services and our customers.
This job role is primarily located in Vienna, Austria. If relocation within the EU is required, we support this process. The job language is primarily English – German is an advantage.
You can work either in our office in the central district of Vienna or remotely to a large extent if desired.
We offer a full-time position (38.5 hours/week) with a minimum gross monthly salary of €5,000 (€70,000 gross per year) according to the Austrian IT collective bargaining agreement. Overpayment depends on qualifications and professional experience.
